SketchbookIn June, 2009, I made a commitment to do a drawing a day--drawings from observation, memory, fantasy, and images. Sometimes I use my sketchbook to work out an idea and design for a new painting. I have also invited my friends’ children to do something in the sketchbook, then draw from their wonderfully creative and uninhibited work.
The sketchbook work shows process and a commitment to practice. No matter how hectic my life becomes, I can find 15 minutes to put pen to paper. Doing a sketch a day has had an amazing impact on my art and life. This is who I am. I do this thing. I don’t judge this work, and most of the time, it’s only seen by me. Almost 15 years later, and as of today (April 24, 2024), I have finished Sketch #6,071. I expect that I will continue this practice until I can no longer hold a drawing implement in my hand. (At this point my right thumb is in a brace, so I might be getting close...) I strongly urge you to make this commitment to yourself, whether it’s in visual images or written word. You will not regret it. |
