Iceland“Voyagers”
Iceland Artist Residency I spent 4 weeks at a northern Iceland artist residency in Akureyri, immersing myself in a completely new environment. After seeing an exhibit about ancient maps of Iceland at the Akureyri Historical Museum, many things struck me—the beautiful topographical illustrations and use of color, the fantastical sea monsters, and the ever-changing shape of the island as new discoveries were learned. As I became more comfortable in this "adopted" home, I noticed my changing insights of this land and culture. Each day brought a different awareness of the climate, the landscape, the sounds and smells of this place. The drawings consist of layers upon layers of materials--maps, photographs, drawing with pen, markers, and colored pencils. I looked to various forms of expression for inspiration--Akureyri history, Icelandic lacework, Hieronymus Bosch, Tarot, illuminated manuscripts. The typography is invented and a culmination of various languages. This series of drawings speak to creating new maps of my intuitive discoveries, highlighting the "self portrait" monsters as The Voyager. Media: mixed media drawings on collaged maps |
